UN condemns deadly attack on Khalifa Sahib Mosque in Afghanistan

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has condemned strongly the deadly attack on the Khalifa Sahib Mosque in western Kabul, Afghanistan during Friday prayers.


In a statement released by the deputy Spokesman to Secretary General, Farhan Haq on Saturday, while the UN Chief extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to those injured.


Guterres said, "Attacks against civilians and civilian objects, including mosques, are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law".


Meanwhile, report has it that no fewer than 50 persons were killed when a suicide bombers detonated his device during Friday prayers at a mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan.


Hundreds of worshippers were gathered inside the Khalifa Sahib Mosque in western Kabul when the huge explosion took place.


Officials put the death toll at 10 but the mosque’s leader confirmed it had risen to 50 by late afternoon, while hundreds are thought to be injured.


Taliban spokesperson Khalid Zadran who maintained the death toll to be 10 people in his tweets on Friday evening, said:


“The casualties toll from today’s bomb explosion in a Khanqah adjacent to a mosque in the Alauddin area of Police District-6 reached 40 casualties, including ten deaths".
