UN Chief begins Ramadan solidarity visit to Senegal, Niger, Nigeria

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres began on Saturday Solidarity visit to Senegal, Niger and Nigeria, during which he will highlight the impact of the Ukraine war on the African continent.


In statement released by the world body recently, while the UN Chief will meet and share an Iftar dinner with President Macky Sall of Senegal, who assumed the Presidency of the African Union earlier this year.


He will also take part in Eid celebrations with President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger and also scheduled to meet President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.  


Moreso, in that three countries, the Secretary-General will have meetings with senior government officials as well as civil society representatives, including women, youth groups and religious leaders.


He will meet families deeply affected by violence and instability in the Sahel, including people internally displaced and refugees.


Mr. Guterres will also see first-hand the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities and will assess progress and challenges to the COVID-19 recovery.    


The UN Chief thanked Senegalese President Sall and the people of Senegal for the warm welcome, particularly on the eve of Eid celebration.


He said, "UN is committed to continue strengthening our partnership with Senegal as we tackle the consequences of conflict, terrorism and the climate crisis.


Secretary General also thanked Senegal for the construction of the new UN House in the country. "This building will be able to host 2,000 employees from 27 UN entities, as they work to serve the people of Senegal and West Africa".
