Sri Lanka: We're closely following the development - UN Chief

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has said that the United Nations continues to follow developments in Sri Lanka closely.


In a statement released recently, while the UN Chief stated that he stands in solidarity with the Sri Lankan people and called on all stakeholders to engage in dialogue to ensure a smooth transition of government.



Report has it that the leader of Sri Lanka has fled the country after thousands of protestors took over the Presidential Palace demanding new leadership.



Over the nation who has been dealing with months of political turmoil as many hold President Gotabaya Rajapaksa responsible for its economic meltdown. 


UN Secretary General while in solidarity called to find sustainable solutions to the economic crisis, condemned all acts of violence and requested for those responsible to be held accountable.


"Those underlining the paramount importance of maintaining the peace should be held accountable. The United Nations stands ready to support Sri Lanka and its people", he said.


Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is facing an unprecedented economic crisis which has brought thousands to the streets since March. The country has run out of cash and is struggling to import basic items like food, fuel and medicine.


President Rajapaksa announced that he plans to resign this week, and the speaker of parliament has said lawmakers will choose the next president on 20 July in a statement on Monday.


Sri Lanka President who had overseen a ruthless crushing of the Tamil Tigers insurgents as defence secretary, is set to resign on Wednesday.


His brothers and nephew earlier quit as ministers as Sri Lanka began running out of fuel, food and other essentials in the worst crisis since independence from Britain in 1948.
