Ondo: What UN Chief says over horrific attack at Church in Nigeria

United Nations has condemned in strongest terms the heinous attack in the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Nigeria, that resulted in death and injuries of scores of civilians as people gathered for the Pentecost service on Sunday.


The Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres who disclosed this on Tuesday, said attacks on places of worship are abhorrent, urged Nigerian authorities to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators to justice.


The UN Chief on his tweet on Tuesday extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Also, Pope Francis said he was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific attack at Saint Francis church in Owo in Nigeria.


While called for prayer for all those affected, described the act as unspeakable violence and for the conversion of those blinded by hatred and violence.


On 5 June 2022, suspected gunmen entered the St. Francis Church in southwest Nigeria at around noon as Sunday mass was ending, shot at worshippers and detonated dynamite, killing more than 20 and critically injuring many others.


According to reports, residents said the attack lasted about 15 minutes, during which time there was no immediate response from security forces.


While this horrific incident came almost two months after at least eight people were killed on a train from Abuja to Kaduna, northern part of Nigeria.
