The Nigerian Government have received 4,400,000 doses of Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines from the Government of Spain on Tuesday, 24th May 2023.
This was disclosed by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), as the Spain Ambassador to Nigeria, Juan Ignatio Sell, stated that this has been the largest COVID-19 donation to any African nation.
While the donation is in fulfillment of Sell country’s commitment to support developing countries in ramping up vaccination against COVID-19.
According to him, "In 2020, the world was faced with the challenge to develop an effective vaccine. In 2021 the challenges evolved to production and distribution of the vaccines. Today in 2022, we need to put this vaccines within people’s reach", Sell said.
Speaking at the event, European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, World Health Organisation, UNICEF Country Representative commended Nigeria in its efforts to vaccinate all eligible Nigerians.
Receiving the donation on behalf of Nigerian Government, ED/CEO NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, appreciated the Spanish government for the donation, added that the gesture came at a time it is most needed.
Shuaib used the opportunity to call on eligible Nigerians who are yet to be vaccinated to do so.
He said, “if we keep up with the vaccination, the likely scenario is that even though the virus continues to evolve, the severity of the disease will reduce overtime as the immunity increases due to vaccination.”
