Killers of Peacekeeper, 3 others injured in Mali must not be spared

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has called on Malian authorities to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of the attack that led to death of a peacekeeper and 3 others injured in the country on June 1, 2022.


In a statement released over attack perpetrated against a logistics convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), while UN Chief wanted perpetrators be brought to justice swiftly.


UN Secretary General condemned the act, expressed deep condolences to the family of the victim, as well as to the Kingdom and people of Jordan, also wished a speedy recovery to the injured.


Guterres recalled that attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law, while reaffirmed the determination of the United Nations to support the people of Mali in their quest for peace and security.


The convoy patrolling near the town of Kidal in northern Mali was hit by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in an attack that lasted about an hour, MINUSMA spokesman, Olivier Salgado tweeted.


No details were given about the suspected attackers.


MINUSMA, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali was deployed in 2013 to help shore up the fragile Sahel state in the face of jihadist attacks.


With 13,000 members, the mission is one of the UN's biggest peacekeeping operations, and also one of its most dangerous, as report says 172 troops have died from hostile acts.
