The Gambia President, Adama Barrow has pledged $100,000 on behalf of his country at the African Union Humanitarian Summit towards the African Humanitarian Agency, an AU initiative to address humanitarian and other disasters on the continent.
In announcing the pledge on Friday, President Barrow said he welcomed the initiative to collectively “improve our humanitarian situation, which will continue to be potential channels to realising the ‘Africa We Want."
Food insecurity and malnutrition, he added, continue to hamper the continent’s progress.
The President concluded by calling on his fellow African leaders to “work towards mitigating our humanitarian challenges” by closing “the gap between humanitarian needs, intervention programmes, and funding.”
Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari in his remarks, said "Your Excellencies, as we meet today in this historic city of Malabo to actualize our dreams to establish the African Humanitarian Agency, I congratulate you all for rising to the occasion".
While pledging three million U S dollars ($3m) for the take off of the African Union Humanitarian Agency, the President appreciated the Specialized Technical Committee for their hard work to produce the statutes.
The African Union Chairman and President of Senegal, Macky Sall, pledged three million US dollars ($3m) on behalf of his country, urging other African leaders to contribute to the establishment of the humanitarian agency.
The AU Chairman said the rising challenges of Climate Change, natural disasters and terrorism had made it mandatory to set up an Agency that would meet the needs of displaced Africans.
The President of the host country, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, pledged four million U S dollars ($4m), with two U S million dollars ($2m) for the new Agency, while two million U S dollars ($2m) will go to Mozambique.
