Nigerian Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Fashola has charged the newly inaugurated President and members of the Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria (SURCON) to see leadership of the professional body as an opportunity to contribute to the development of quality manpower for the nation.
Fashola who made this known before inaugurating the Council Members at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Works and Housing in Abuja on Thursday, reminded them that they have been appointed to develop quality manpower for the prosperity and development of Nigeria because the success and productivity of any nation depends on quality human capital.
“Let me remind you that you are serving as manpower developers. You are helping to develop Nigeria’s human capital, helping to prepare the next generation to take over from us,” he remarked.
Emphasizing on the importance of quality and reliable manpower development for the country, the Minister affirmed that the prosperity of Nigeria depends on quality human capital made up of people who have skills to formulate policies and implement same as well as proffer appropriate solutions to problems when they arise.
The Minister also charged the Council members to work towards the acceleration of the gathering of quality and adequate geospatial data for the country, noting that any country with an organized, adequate, handy and quality data has a secured prosperity for its citizenry.
Fashola further advised SURCON members to, as a matter of importance, shun ego in discharging their duties in order to avoid actions that could jeopardise and affect their outputs in a negative way.
He added that concentrating on the assignment will facilitate quality result while distraction will create provlems, noting that they have been appointment with the task of nation building and solving problems.
Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bashir Nura Alkali, disclosed that the Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria, SURCON, was established to ensure registration of surveyors as well as control the practice of the profession in Nigeria.
Describing the composition of the Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria, Mr. Alkali said that it is made up of 59 members as follows: The President, Vice President, 5 persons, one of whom shall be the Surveyor- General of the Federation, other members are drawn from among the interest groups in the field of Survey including the Armed Forces, Surveyors- General of each state of the federation, twelve persons elected by Nigerian Institute of Surveyors in accordance with the provision in the Nigerian Constitution and four persons appointed by Mr. President from the universities or higher institutions offering courses leading to an approved qualification in surveying but none of them shall come from the same university or higher institution.
Also, the newly inaugurated President of SURCON, Surv. Clement Ikpeama Nwabichie, while expressing appreciation for their appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, noted that the Minister has given them a template of leadership, service, development of quality human capital and development of quality geospatial data for nation building which would guide their tenure. Surv. Nwabichie assured the Minister of their commitment and determination to succeed in the discharge of their responsibilities.
